London, June 4. The second day's racing of the Epsom Summer Meeting took place to-day. The 111 th contest for the Derby resulted :—

Derby Stakes, of £5,000 for the winner, £500 for the nominator of winner, £300 for owner of second, and £200 for owner of third ; colte, 9st; fillies, Bsb 91b ; for 3-year-olds : by subscription of £50 each, h. ft..if declared by the first Tuesday in

Drenching rain fell, which made the course heavy, This year's Epsom Derby has been invested with more than ordinary interest to colonials on account of the Hon. J. White's colt Kirkham figuring among the starters. Australia has more than held her own in al] branches of sport when pitted against the mothercounbry,bub ouratfcempte on theracecou rsehavenot been so very successful and the display made* by Kirkham in the Derby will not add to our laurels, for the colt finished seventh in a field of eight. This musb have been anything but palatable to the army of Australian visitors who we are told witnessed the great) "classic" contest, but at the same time it could not be expected that the Hon. J. White would have the "luck" to pull off an Epsom Derby at the first time of asking. The result is notable for the downfall of Surefoot, the favourite. During the winter the colt was consistently supported, and when he won the Two Thousand Guineas a few weeks back, thus showing he retained his two-year-old form, he was in greater favour than ever. Swrefoot'a defeat means that a lot of money will be pocketed by the "ring"." Sainfoin, the winner, is an inmate of the famous Kingeclorc stable, from whence came the mighty Ormonde, and is owned and trained by John Porter. During the last tew weeks the colt has been greatly fancied for the race. Sainfoin only sported silk once last season, when he won the Asfcley Stakes at Lewes under Bst> 81b by an easy length and a half from Grarter (9sb 4lb), who beat Spring Cup (Bs* 81b) by three parts of a length for second place, while ♦•.he unplaced division were; a poor lot. Le Nord ran second bo Surof bob for the Two Thousand Guineas, and Kasfc season won two out of four engagements. Orwell, who occupied third place in the race, started five times last 'season, hie only winning engagement bejng the Forty-second Triennial Produce Stakes. . The first contest for the' Derby took place so far back as May % 1780, when Sir O. Bunburry'B chestnut horse, Diomed, by Florizel, from^a . Spectator mare, the dam of Pastorella, Fame, etc:., was successful. The bettingr was 6 to 4 against Diomed. Diorned was a fair performer, and afterward went to tho stud, and was sold iri 1798 for 50gs to go to America, w here he was subsequently sold for l.OOOtfe; bub he died shortly after landing.
