MR MONTGOMERY AT AKAROA.

Christchubch, June 5.

Mr Montgomery, M.H.R. for Akaroa addressed bis constituents last night at tbe local Oddfellows' Hall. There was a targe and attentive audience* He said he would support tbe Ministry, reserving to himself the tight to object to any measure* which he bad not supported in tbe pas', or might object to in the present. He hoped tbe local Government Bill, to be introduced next session, would not simply provide for giving subsidies for a time, but would be a comprehensive measure tbit would do away with the vicious system of having to go to Government for money for everything wanted in the district. He had no donbt Government would redeem their pledge to establish local boards of management for the railways. Native lands snould be cold in the open market, so that farmers of moderate means oould purchase them. Government had not done more than tbeir bounden duty in tbe expenditure on defence works. As to Federation, the war scare had shown this would be of no use, for the Federal fleet would be kept at Australia, where tbe greatest number of votes were. The present depression was caused by an unequal distribution of land amongst the population, Protection was absolutely necessary for New Zealand if she was to carry a large population. The land laws should be revised, to that the land could be within the reach of the settlers without their having to have recourse to the money lenders. A vote of thanks and confidence was ctrried unanimously.
