BLUE SPUR SCHOOLHOUSE.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, — Passing and repassing the Blue Spur School building, my attention has been called to the state of the fences, portions of it having been blown, or fallen down, from natural causes. At any rate, it is lying down. The other portion is supported by a prop or two, and will shortly follow suit. The spouting is also down ; and when the dry weather comes the children will be "cadging" water from their neighbors. Let us hope this sleepy committee will rouse their dormant energies into activity, and look after public property as it should be. — I am, &c, An Obsekver. Db Peter on Tobacco.— Dr Peter (Jour, de M. et de Ch. Prat. March, 1875) makes a great war, says the Medical Press and Circular, against tobacco, and accuses it of many evil effects on the organs of the economy, and amongst great smokers in particular, he says, it produces most commonly a flatulent dyspepsia. It is very remarkable that in such patients charcoal powder produces no effect. Above all it is necessary to diminish and forbid the use of tobacco. Pretty good results are obtained from the use of strychnine, especially from the tincture of nux-vomica. But these are difficult of administration, and, besides, patients know their names and fear them. He therefore recommends the following prescription : — One drachm of bitter drops of rhubarb, made into forty pills, one or two of which are taken before each meal.
