THE WEATHER.

Christcliurch was like a ""burning fiery furnace" yesterday -and last cigiht, and, though- tiere is a cool breeze blowing today, the weather is still very warm. Yesterday the thermometer went up to nearly 90 degrees, and was close to tbat figura at night, the -breathless stateof the atmosphere b9injg very oppressive. Early thisi morning about 75 degTees were registered, but at noon the figure was about 80 degrees. An abstract of tha temperature and rainfall at Kaikoura., for the year 1901, supplied by Dr Guifb, shows that the mean of all highest daily temperatures for the year was 6.deg, as against 63deg during the previous year. Tha mean lowest temperature was 42deg, identical with the previous-year's record. The highest record was 88deg, rnd the lowest 24deg, as against 94deg and 25deg respectively. The mean temperature in both years was 53deg. Thirty-nine inches of rain fell, there being seventy-three days on whicli. it rained, tho greatest fall being 6in* on Dec. 14. The figures for the previous year were 40in on 123 days, with 6.67in as the greatest fall.
