Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 24. The flagship Royal Arthur arrived from Sydney on Saturday. wiLLINGON, June 23. The Gear Meat Company have declared the usual interim dividend of 5 per cent, for the half year. The system of reduced fares on the Manawatu railway and on all the Government railways m the colony will come into force on Monday next. The body of an elderly man named Packard, 55 years old, who is believed to have come from Wanganui, was found on the beach at Kilbirnie this morning. There are no marks of violence and the man /had apparently been dead for about two days. Mr J. L. Kimbel's furniture factory, ' Ghuznee street, was burned down last night. The machinery, which belonged to the D.1.C., was insured for £280. The building is part of a block owned by Mr J. Myers, who is insured m all for £1000. OAMARU, June 23. An influential deputation of the prohibition party waited on the Hon. Mr Jones prior to his departure for Wellington, and urged that the proposed amendments to the liquor laws would be a retrograde step. Mr Jones took a Bimilar view, and promised to oppose them to the utmost. i■ ■ ■
