OPUNAKE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) August 22. As a sequel to the recent alleged tarring and feathering incident, I understand several people have been summoned to appear at New Plymouth on Friday, 30th inst., to answer a charge of "unlawfully assembling." Why the case is to be heard away from Opunake nobody seems to know. In any case, it is said that some extraordinary evidence will be elicited. On Wednesday evening the Bowling Club's annual ball took place. It was a great success. The floor was crowded with dancers, and many non-dancers enjoyed themselves with cards, etc. A feature of the ball was the decorations, arranged by Mr. F. Des Forges. The club's funds benefit to the extent of about £40. Mr. F. Mason, of Pihama, who has been seriously ill, is now on the road lo recovery. The milking season is approaching again, and farmers are beginning to wonder what sort of prices will rule this year. We can hardly expect to get the same favourable price as prevailed at the beginning of last season. A proposal is on foot to form a western football district, to reach from the Tapuae river to the Oeo. There is no doubt that something of the kind is necessary to resuscitate football on this coast. I understand final arrangements are to be made at a meeting at Opu-j nake at an early date.
