LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Supreme Court office was closed to-day, in observance of the anniversary of the proclamation o& her late Majesty's sovereignty over New Zealand. Before Captain J. A. H. Marciel and P. Knight, J.P., at the Lyttelton Magistrate's Court this morning, James Montgomery, a seaman, was fined 20/for using abusive language. Karl August Klingenberg, a seaman, was charged with casting offensive matter on the footpath. The Bench, in imposing, a fine of £l, recommended that steps be taken to have latrines erected in such positions as to be accessible to the public. The proposal of the Mayor to set up a campaign against stray dogs was referred to at yesterday's meeting of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Mr J. H. Parker said that Christehureh had never been so free of such dogs as at the present time. If there were to be indiscriminate catching of dogs with a view to their destruction ho considered that there would be a danger that many citizens might lose valuable and much-prized pets. There was no occasion for any action such as that I proposed. There closes on Saturday a phenomenal boot sale. About a month ago Stewart Robinson set'out to reduce his huge stocks before stocktaking. The amount aimed at was a big one, and great price concessions had to be made in order to bring in the enormous amount of extra business in the time allowed. Time's up on Saturday, at 1 o'clock. TJp to that time the price concessions will rule. The opportunity is as unusual as it is timely. At this season of the year boots sell well and quickly, and they are good property for the seller. Wet weather is coming, and unless *you have your winter footwear you are courting colds and trouble. The best chest protection is a good boot—the reliable footwear that Stewart Robinson sells, at prices that are the talk of the town. This is the shop that keeps down prices. Note that this sale definitely closes on Saturday. .'3
