BIG STRIKE LIKELY.
SHIPPING TROUBLE. AUSTRALIAN TRADE PARALYSED. LARGE NUMBERS AFFECTED. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Hoc. May 21, 11.5) SYDNEY.'May 21. It is estimated that the immediate effect of the Seamen's decision will be to throw 6000 men ovit of employment and paralyse the coastal and interstate trade. A cessation of the interstate shipping will render 10,000 miners idle. As the seamen of three States have decided to strike the union officials expect a spread to other States. It is understood that the seamen's decision will not affect the deep sea shipping. /fhe demands include a six-hour Working day, increased wages, compensation for injuries received in the course of employment, compensation to the relatives of sailors dying of such injuries, and improved acs commodation. (Rcc. May 21, 11.5) MELBOURNE, May 21. The Federal Cabinet meets to-day to decide what action shall be taken regarding the seamen's strike. The wharf labourers' and seamen's conference readied no decision to join forces. The conference is not resuming. MARKETS ALREADY AFFECTED. (Rcc. May 21, 8.45) SYDNEY, May 21. The dislocating of the shipping services is already affecting the markets. Tasmanian potatoes have advanced £1 a ton. POLICE KEEP ORDER. MELBOURNE, May 20. There are no further developments in the shipping dispute. Slight disiurbances occurred between unionsts and non-unionists. The police intervened and prevented further trouble. ADELAIDE"SEAMEN. ADELAIDE, May 20. The seamen's meeting reaffirmed . Its decision not to strike, but to refer _ the dispute to arbitration. STRIKE GROWING. SYDNEY, May 20. , A mass meeting of seamen decided - to give 24 hours' notice at their home ports of their intention to strike.
