RICCARTON BOROUGH.

MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Biecarton Borough Council met last night, there being present: Mr F. George (Deputy-Mayor) and Cra H. W. Wise, A. E. Steere, T. J. Stokes, G. A. Rankin, C. W. Barrel], W. '.s. W. Charters, and J. Muivniugs. The Finance Committee in its report stated that it could not recommend the remission of rates in loan areas in lieu of the completion of the work for which the loan was raised. The committee recommended that rates due by Mrs L. M. Williams be not remitted. The report was adopted. The Lighting Committee reported that, since last meeting, five new consumers had been connected with the electrical supply. The revenue for April was £7B 8/8. The report was adopted. The report of the Works Committee dealt with work done in the borough since the last meeting of the council. The committee recommended that the council should ask the Christchurch Drainage Board to pipe-in the drain at Lowe Street, in front of the Addington Workshops, and also that the channelling in Washbourne Street be completed, the cost to be borne by the district fund. The report was adopted. Besolutions from the Canterbury Progress League regarding the extension of the hydro-electrical scheme in Canterbury were endorsed. The Deputy-Mayor read the Mayor's statement, iu which lie reported that he had been present at the tour of inspection that the Christchurch Domains Board had made of the Garden's and Park. - He had ascertained that the board intended to cut down the line of trees on the northern side of Biecarton Road from the Christchurch Hospital to about opposite the first gate entrance to the cricket grounds. The reason for this was that the trees were getting on to the electric wires. The board intended to plant new trees, probably flowering cherries. The present trees shaded the road in the winter, and caused it to be always in bad order. A letter was read from a ratepayer

of Kenilwortli Street, who complained that a rubbish collection had been made in the street only twice in nine weeks. The town clerk stated that a rubbish collection was made in the borough once a month, and that only tins and bottles were taken away. Perishable rubbish had to bo disposed of by the householders in some other way. The town clerk's reply was endorsed. It was stated that the Works Committee had the whole matter of a rubbish collection for the borough under consideration. , Cr Stokes moved, in accordance with notice of motion, that the continuation of Matai Street across the north railway line, which is at present known as Railway Terrace be considered as a portion of Matai Street and renamed accordingly. The motion was carried. It was also decided that that portion of Matai Street running along the railway line be renamed Mona Vale Avenue. A vote of thanks to the Canterbury Automobile Association for the work it had done in conveying returning soldiers to their homes was carried.
