MOTHERS' UNION.

ANNUAL MEETING. There was a good attendance of members at the thirteenth annual meeting in connection with the Canterbury branch of the Mothers' Union, which was held yesterday afternoon in St. John's Schoolroom. His Lordship Bishop Julius presided, and there were also on the platform Rev. F. N. Taylor and Rev. J. R. Hewland.

| After the meeting had been opened with prayer and song, the Bishop delivered a brief address concerning the work of the Union. He urged members to work for definite aims and ends —to 'make themselves responsible for certain | duties, and to see that, they were carried out. The elections, continued the speaker, were very close at hand, and in this very fact lay the opportunity for Work on the part of the Union. Members of it must realise, if no one else did, how essential.it'was that children should receive religious instruction in State schools, and he asked them, whenevier possible, to vote for the man who pledged himself to support the measure. Continuing, his Lordship said that he •did not wish members to vote for a man whose character was not good, even if he promised to support the Bible-in-I State-Schools measure, for everyone j wanted Parliament to be macle up of men whose lives were clean and of good repute. Next to the question of character, however, he asked them to put this particular matter in the forefront when deciding the matter of how" to vote,

for it was only by so doing that it would become actual law.

" The annual 'report was then j/ead, and showed that a very satisfactory year's work had been accomplished. A leading feature was the formation of new ties with the Homeland, six branches having become linked to similar ones in England, and the correspondence on both sides being- a source of much pleasure and profit. Mention was made of the pleasure derived by members from annual festival of the union, which was held early in the year, including the re-union at Bishopscourt.

The balance-sheet .showed that the year had been commenced with a credit balance of £ll, and concluded with a credit of £lO, and no outstanding bilities.

The report and balaiice-sheet v were adopted on the motion of Bey. E. N. Taylor, seconded by Rev. J. R. HewThe election of officers resulted atf follows:—President, her Excellency Lady Liverpool; diocesan president, Mrs Julius j (Bishopscourt, Christchurch)'; vice-presidents, Mrs Carrington (The Deanery), Mrs Seddon, Mrs Norton Francis (Waimate) ; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mrs Kirkpatrick; literature associate, Mrs Lionel Knight (Hawkesbury Avenue); committee —: delegates from each branch, one of whom shall always be the branch secretary^
