IN HUMOROUS MOOD.

MR ISITT'S EFFORT.

A CAETOON AND A SMILE.

Mr L. M. Isitt's capacity as an entertainer is undoubted —-his political opponents swear that it is greater than his capacity for politics. One of his brightest interludes last evening was his criticism of- a cartoon appearing in a Eeform Party publication, and incidentally the smile of the Hon. W. Herries.

The cartoon, Mr Isitt explained, was contained in the publication "Under Which. Elag,' ' .which, he alleged, printed more tarradiddles to the square inch than any other publication that he had seen. "And the cartoon! Shades of Phil May and Tenniel —what a cartoon! The artist has made his own crowd look such unmitigated scoundrels that when he wants to picture the Liberals he has nothing lower left!" (Laughter.)

Mr Isitt went on to describe the eartoon in detail, and continued: —"The masterpiece is the Herries smile. It is a supreme achievement and the pride of its possessor, and it is the great stock-in-trade of the Tory Party. When they feel the evil times, when the criticism of the Liberals waxes fierce, and they are dumb, then Mr "Herries, who seldom speaks, smiles. It is sardonic, superior, Mephistophelian. It suggests that he has up his sleeve some cards that he will play and confound his critics. But like Mr Massey's high forehead, there is nothing behind it. (Laughter.)
