IDLE FACTORIES IN LONDON TO BE REOPENED. Schemes for reducing distress among women have been adopted by the central committee on women's employment in connection with the Queen's Work for Women Fund. It is proposed to take over workrooms in London where business is at a standstill, and employ the women and girls in making garments for those in distress, including the refugees from Prance and Belgium. * New workrooms will also be established, where part of the programme will be skilled training for semi-skilled or unskilled women workers. The* first articles to be produced will be outfits and cradles for the use of expectant mothers. The minimum rate of pay will be 3d an hour net, and the maximum number of hours a week forty. It is stated that there are 45,000 women and girls unemployed in London. A contract for a large number of shirts has already been placed with the committee. Three orders by the Queen have been placed through the committee with provincial firms, providing Avork for a number of women. These orders are'for underclothing for convalescent soldiers, s\iits for discharged soldiers, and undergarments for women and children. The coi littee is now obtaining estimates for 50,000 mattresses and 50,000 pillow-eases for war refugees.
