HOCKEY.

NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Interest in men's hockey in Christchurch has by now fallen sadly to the ground. However, the visit of the English ladies' team has created quite a great deal of interest amongst the men, as well as the ladies, and their match against the Canterbury girls is sure to draw a full muster of the male enthusiasts.

The Canterbury touring team returned yesterday by the second express from Invercargill, after a very successful and creditable tour, the team not having lost a<#natch. The tourists won their matches against Oamaru and Otago, and drew with Southland, lne fact that the team was by •no means Canterbury's strongest eleven adds greatly to the credit of their performances. They were met last night by a fair number of enthusiasts, also by most of the members of the South Inland team, who were leaving for Wellington. The team was accompanied by Ryeburn, from Dunedin, and J. Anderson, from Timaru, both of whom are members of the South Island eleven. _ The selectors of the South Island team have had a very unenviable task in selecting a team that could make the journey to Wellington, and the combination which Jeft Lyttelton last evening is by no means their first choice. Nevertheless, the men should give a good exhibition to-morrow*. The team is as follows: —Goal, H. Luxtoii (Can: terbury); backs, P. Martin (Canter 7 bury), and V. Bradley (Nelson); halves, W. Duffield and D. Snell (Canterbury), and J. Anderson (South Canterbury); forwards, W. Patrick, H. Throp, and S. Holland (Canterbury), T. C. Ryeburn (Otago) and A. Stratten (Nelson). Canterbury has seven representatives, Nelson two, and Otago and South Canterbury one each. Southland is not represented. The following players were unable to make the trip: — Gibbon (Nelson), C. Bellamy, C. Brown, W. Chappell, and C. Rix (Canterbury), Fitt and Slater (Otago), Egan (Buller), and Richards and Strang (Southland). S. Hawkins (Canterbury) has been asked to go as twelfth man, and he left last night. The match will be played tomorrow, and the team will return on Sunday. Throp (Sydenham) heads the list of scorers in club hockey in Christchurch this season, with sixteen goals. Other leading scorers are as follow: —'S. Hawkins 12, D, Smith 9, and C. Hutchings 8, while E. Cummins, W. Grammar, W. Chappell, A. S. JDra,yton, and A. George come next with seven goals each. The Addington Club will hold its periodical and final social on Monday evening, in the Caledonian Hall, Worcester Street. The social is to take the form of a euchre party and general indoor sports. As this form of entertainment lias become veyy popular in the club a large attendance is expected. The cricket branch of the Sydenham Hockey Club has held its annual meeting, and prospects point to the club having a very successful season so far as numbers are concerned. The club hopes to be able to havei two teams this year. : j '
