SUPREME COURT.
A MATTER OF RATES. The Christrhurch City Council sought to recover from Riddell ami others £52 17/11, for rates on St. Margaret's College, Craumer Square. Mr H. H. Loughnan appeared for plaintiff, and Mr H. J. Beswick for defendants. The defence was that the property was exempt from rates, under section 2, subsection G, of the Rating Act, as a school not carried out exclusively for pecuniary gain or profit. His Honour reserved judgment. DIVORCE CASES. Decrees nisi were granted in the divorce cases of Fanny Richardson v. George Richardson, desertion; Maud Mary Gordon v. James Gordon, desertion; Martha Tressler v. Charles-Fred-erick Tressler, desertion; Sarah H. E. Sutcliffe v. Thomas Richard Sutcliffe, cruelty and failure to maintain. TO-DAY'S SITTING. BANKS v. THE KING. When the court resunied this morning a re-trial of the case of Banks v. The King was started. A jury of twelye was empanelled. This was a case in which Frances Elizabeth Banks sought to recorer from the Railways Department £2OOO, damages for the loss of her husband, William Alexander Banks, who was killed by the north line express at the High Street railway. crossing, Rangiora, on September 12, 1913. At the time of his death Banks was driving a team'of five horses attached to a lorry. « When the case was heard first the jury awarded plaintiff £ISOO. The defendant Department appealed, and the Court of Appeal decided that the verdict was against the weight of evidence, and ordered a new trial.
Mr S. G. Raymond,' K.C., with him Mr Greeson, appeared for the plaintiff. For the defence appeared Mr P. S. K. Macassey, with,him Mr Wright. (Proceeding.)
