A Press Association wire from Palmerston North says that the English Hockey ladies defated Manawatu yesterday afternoon after a hard-fought game by three goals to nil. Misses Harris and Johnson will contribute duetsx Miss A. Gibsou, who recently gained a scholarship for music at the Royal Academy of Music, London, will act as accompanist. Mr Sidney Williamson will conduct. Dr W. P. Evans, in speaking of the visit of the representatives of the British Association of Science at the meeting of the Philosophical Institute last night, said it was problematical, owing to the European war, if the visiting scientists would be able to fulfil their - engagements as planned, and the speaker outlined them. Probably, he said, many of the members of the scientific societies in New Zealand might have to help their countries in other ways.than by indulging in excursions. " Whatever we may think of the fact that it is possible for such a crisis to arise, I feel certain that I am only voicing the feeling of the Institute as a whole when I say I feel a pride in the fact that England) with a due sense of her own majesty, has gone into a conflict in order to keep her promises, a conflict the like of which the world has never Been."
