WELLINGTON, August a. The High Commissioner's cable, dated London,. August 1, is as follows (quotations, unless otherwise specified, are average market prices on spot): — The mutton market is firm, with an upward tendency. Canterbury, 4|d for lightweight, heavy-weight 4d; North Island, 4|d for light-weight. . The lamb market is weaker and slightly lower as a result of the heavy arrivals during the last month. Canterbury, up ( to thirty-twos, 6d; heavy-weights, up to forty-fours, sid; other than Canterbury, 51d for light-weight. The demand is chiefly for very light weights. .The beef market is very firm. New Zealand hinds sd, fores 3§d. The supplies of American chilled beef are small, hinds 6|d, fores 3Jd. The butter market is very unsettled on account of the European situation. Danish is steady at 131/- to 134/-, New Zealand is firm at 120/- to 124/-'; Australian, firm at 112/- to 114/-; Siberian, good demand at 110/- to 114/-; Irish creamery, 118/- to 120/-, unsalted 120/;to 122/-. The cheese market is quiet and steady at present, and is not affected to any extent by the European situation. Canadian white coloured is at 63/to 65/-; New Zealand, white 66/- to 66/6, coloured 64/- to 65/-. The hemp market is lifeless. New Zealand good-fair is worth £24 10/-, fair £22 10/-; Manila, fair current £25. The output from Manila for the week was 16,000 bales. The wool market-is quiet. The excitement in the grain trade continues. Prices are still rising. New .Zealand wheat is quoted at 39/- c.i.f.; A grade Garton oats 23/- c.i.f.. . New Zealand peas (partridge) per 5041b, 54/-. New Zealand beans, f.a.q. (new crop), per 5041b 35/6. The honey market is quiet, and there is small business doing. New Zealand, finest, is quoted at 45/-. General business is at a standstill on all markets except for food supplies. There is nothing doing because cover for war risk is impossible, except at hibitive charges, and quotations are nominal.

The following shipments of produce were dispatched from the Argentine to the United Kingdom during July, as compared with July, 1913: —Frozen beef, quarters, 1914. 119,000; 1913, 143,000.
