THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM.
QUESTION OF STAFFING. A CHANGE PROPOSED. The City Council had before it last evening a report from the Electricity Committee, which dealt in some detail with the question of stalling, in view of the approach of the inauguration of the Lake Coleridge scheme in Christchurch. It is stated that the present electrical engineer (Mr J. Croiribie Scott), whose salary is £SOO per annum, had applied for an increase to £6OO. The matter was discussed in committee, and it is understood that the whole situation is to be reviewed by the Electricity Committee, which will report later to the council.
Some of the councillors expressed the opinion that there should be staff reorganisation in the Electrical Department. They pointed out that the advent of the big electrical scheme was a big business as well as a big engineering proposition, and contended that there should be; placed in charge an official who would be held responsible -to the council for the working of the whole system, from the business as well as the practical' engineering point of view. It was, admitted that Mr Scott's salary would be inadequate if this course were decided upon. The suggestion was therefore made that the position should be advertised, at a substantial salary, and that- the applications should be submitted to. the council.
