EASTER CARNIVAL.

CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB. GREAT AUTUMN HANDICAP DAY. AUSTRALASIAN RECORD ESTABLISHED. COURSE RECORDS IN HURDLE RACE. The weather conditions were ideal tvhen racing was resumed at Riccarton io-day. The light nor'-west wind that Mew down the straight helped the competitors in the short distance events, and fast times were the, order of the day. Though a trifle on the hard side, ihe track afforded splendid going, and the fields were well up to the standard of former years both in the matter of size and quality. If not up to the first day's record, the attendance was particularly good, and included a fair number of visitors from other parts of the Dominion. Details of the racing are: —

PEERSWICK HURDLE HANDICAP, of 200 sovs; second 40 sovs and third -0 sovs from the stake. One mile and threequarters. 8 D. H. Roberts's b g Kilmeny, by Kilcheran —Bulbul, 6yrs, 12.8 (L. Goldseeker and Cardiff carried on the running past the stand almost on terms from Kilmeny and Daylight Bill. Coming to the mile post Cardiff had drawn clear, and a little further on Kilmeny deposed Goldseeker, with Cornelian tailing off last. Going round the top turn Cardiff still held a slight advantage from Kilmeny, with Daylight Bill improving his position. Cardiff was first over the last jump, but then Kilmeny drew away and won comfortably by half a length from Daylight Bill. Cardiff was two lengths further back in third place, followed at a con-. sid6rable interval by Goldseeker. Time, 3min 14 2-ssec. AUTUMN NURSERY HANDICAP, of 400 sovs j second 80 sovs and third 40 sovs from the stake. For two-year-olds. Six furlongs. 2*3. B. Honesty lost her rider soon after the start, but the others moved off in good line. Charmilla was the first to show out, and turning into the course proper she had Bee and Findhorn as her nearest attendants. At the distance Bee headed Charmilla, but the latter came again under pressure and won a good race by a head. Findhorn was third, & length away, followed by Ringform, Snapdragon, and Moulu. Time, lmin 11 4-ssec, an Australasian record.

YALDHURST WELTER HANDICAP, of 250 sovs; second 50 sovs and third 25 | sovs from stake. Seven furlongs. 1 J. J. M'Bride's ch h Obsono, by Obligato or Gipsy Grand—lima, aged, 9.6 (Bell) 1 9 J. Ireland's ch g Eaglestone, aged, 7.7 (Campbell) .. ~ ~ . . 0 (Winner bred by J, F. Reid and trained by R. M'Kay.) After a false start the big field was dispatched on good terms, but Historiette was interfered with and lost several lengths. Forest Belle was in front for a few strides, but with a furlong gone Sveaborg shot to the front. Ho showed the way all round the top turn from Briar Patch, Obsono, Gnome, and Glenowl, and at the distance was still galloping strongly in front. A little further on Obsono and Glenowl put in strong challenges, and in a good finish the former won by a neck. Free was third, a length back, just clear of Taskmaster, Sveaborg, and Teviotdale. Time, lmin 27 4-ssec. GREAT AUTUMN HANDICAP, of 1300 sovs; second 200 sovs and third 130 sovs from the stake. From a splendid send-off Ladoga was the last to move, and as the 11 runners turned out of the straight, Specialform, Warstep and Ladoga formed the vanguard. Coming to the mile post Ladoga had drawn clear, while Specialform lost her xjlacc, dropping back last with Kooya. Ladoga continued to make play all along the back from Warstep, after whom in close order came Flora Macdonald, Peg, Bronze, and Expect. There was little change in the order as tlxcy raced round the top turn, -and Ladoga landed into the straight a length clear of Warstep, closely followed by Flora Macdonald, Bronze, and Specialform. At the distance Bronze had got to Ladoga, »nd after a short struggle she passed the post three-parts of a length to the good. Warstep finished third, half a length further back, followed in close order by Specialform, Flora Macdonald. Expect, and Sea

Pink. Kooya and Peg were the last two to finish. Time, 2min 33 4-ssec. ADDINGTON HANDICAP, of 140 sovs; second 20 sovs, third 14 sovs from the stake. Macara and trained by R. O'Donnell.) Soon after the start Sir Hamilton came down and Joan fell over him. Slogan made play all round the far turn from Raymont, Bonne Bouche, and Moddite. The leader kept his position till within a furlong of the post, where Raymont shot out and Avon comfortably by a length from Moddite, who was half a length in front of Slogan. Close up came Bonne Bouche and Chrysotis. Time, lmin 42 2-ssec. TWENTY-SECOND CHALLENGE STAKES, of 750 sovs; second 100 sovs, third 50 sovs from the stake. Seven furlongs. 1 G. D. Greenwood's br g Emperador, by Charlemagne II. —Lady Wayward 4yrs, 9.4 (Young) 1 3 Sir Geo. Clifford's b h Autumnus, by Treadmill —Gold Leaf, 4yrs, 9.0 (Deeley) 2 4 J. B. From a good send off Hyettus was the first to break the line, and he piloted the field past the six furlong post well clear of Emperador and Bold Stroke, who were racing on terms. There was practipally no in the order as they ran round the far tarn, except that Rinaldo had taken fourth place and Autumnus could be .seen Improving his position. Hyettus was first into . the ' straight, but half way to the post ho faded out, giving way and Autumnus. This pair fought out a great finish, and it was only in the last few strides that Emperador got his head in front. Two lengths back came Rinaldo, well clear of Pariform, Hyettus, and Downham. Time, lmin 26 4-ssec. TEMPLETON HANDICAP, of 300 sovs; second 60 sovs, third 30 sovs from the stake. Six furlongs. 1 Jno. Grigg's b m First Glance, by Kosmos Bey—Ophelia, 4yrs, 7.13 (Berry) 1 2 G. L. Chudic commenced very quickly, and at the end of a furlong he had a substantial lead from SauCi : and Silver Shield, -who were running almost on terms. The Easter winner was first into the straight, and he led the field to the distance. There Sauci closed on him,: and First Glance put in lier claim on the inside. The latter drew away after a short struggle, and won comfortably by a length and a half. Chudic was a length back, third, followed by Silver Shield. Time, lmin 12 3-ssec.

NOTES ON THE RACING. There was not a great deal of interest taken in the Peerswick Hurdle Bace, due probably to the poor class oil the competitors. The North Islandbred Cornelian was again elected favourite despite the fact of his being palpably sore when doing his preliminary. His backers had a very poor run for their money, as the visitor commenced to tail off from the start and never even got into the fighting line. Cardiff made play for most of the journey and was actually first to cross the final obstacle. Then Kilmeny put in his claim and, stalling off a late run by Daylight Bill, won comfortably by half a length. That the pace was on all through is evidenced by the time recorded, which constitutes a fresh record for the course.

For some unaccountable reason Moulu was made a staunch favourite for the Autumn Nursery Handicap, despite the fact that he hias not as yet even run into a place. Charmilla was quickest to begin, and she cut out the running at a very solid bat. At. the distance Bee looked to have Charmilla's measure, but when Jones called on the latter for a final effort she responded the more generously of the pair, and just got her head.in front as the judge's box was reached. Moulu never threatened danger, and so far he has failed to sustain the reputation he holds in private. Helped by the nor'-west wind, the six furlongs was cut out in the phenomenal time of lmin 11 4-ssec, which constitutes an Australasian record. Just after the start Honesty parted company with her rider, but fortunately the latter was not hurt.

The chances of several competitors in the Yaldhurst Welter were highly esteemed, and it was only at the finish of the betting that Obsono showed a slightly larger total than Historiette. There was also plenty of support for Sveaborg, the older brother to Chudic. He was one of the quickest to begin, and even up to the distance looked all over a winner. No sooner was he tackled by Obsono and Glenowl, however, than he retired from the contest, and after a splendid struggle between the other pair Obsono prevailed by a neck. Historiette appeared to get interfered with when the barrier was released, and tailed off, being one of the last to finish.

Emperador and Gapon were the only withdrawals from the Great Autumn Handicap, leaving a serviceable field of eleven to contest the big event of the day. Nothing looked better than the "Higliden" pair, Bronze and Expect, the latter being none the worse after his strenuous exertions in tfce Great Easter Handicap. Sea Pi'nlt looked a little on the jolly side, but little fault could be found with the condition in which Thrax, Warstep, Kooya, and Ladoga were turned out by their respective mentors. The pace was made very solid from the start by Warstep and . Ladoga, and at the mile post the latter drew clear, showing the way

along the back in great style. It was not till well into the straight that Bronze could be seen threading her way through, and at the distance she had got on terms with Ladoga and Warstep. A short struggle ensued, and, amidst great excitement, the "Highden" representative flashed past the post nearly a length ahead of Ladoga. Half a length further back came Warstep, and then in order —Specialform, Flora Macdonald, Expect, and Sea Pink. The last to finish were Kooya, who got chopped out at the start, and Peg.

The West Coast-owned Slogan attempted to win the Addington Plate from start to finish. He looked to have .winning prospects till the distance-post was reached, where Raymont, who had always been handy, drew out and scored comfortably from the fast-finishing Moddite. When the horses were passing the seven-furlong post Sir Hamilton came down, and Joan, who was racing on his heels, came down over him. The latter's rider was uninjured, but M'Coll, the rider of Sir Hamilton, was stunned, and had to receive medical attendance.

Mr Greenwood's pair, Emperador and Rencontre, were in very strong demand for the Challenge Stakes, while there was also plenty of money for Sir Geo. Clifford's pair, Autumnus and Bold Stroke, also for Pariform. Hyettus, who was the outsider of the field, quickly got clear, and he carried on the running at a very solid bat to halfway down the straight. There he retired well beaten, leaving the issue to Emperador .and Autumnus. This pair fought out a great finish, and excitement ran high as Emperador just got his head in front as the post was reached. Rinaldo ran a good race, but Rencontre failed to reproduce her Champagne Stakes form, being in a rearward position all through. Despite her poor showing in the Great Easter Handicap, First Glance was made a much better favourite than Sauce for the Templeton Handicap. Chudic cut out the running at a very solid pace to the distance when First Glance, who had been running last, got a clear run on the rails, and won .comfortably from Sauci. Chudic faded out rather badly in the last furlong, evidently being hampered by the extra weight.
