EASTER TURF CARNIVAL.

C.J.C. MEETING. iREAT EASTER HANDICAP. RACING AT AUCKLAND. FEILDING CUP DAY. The climatic conditions experienced ,for the opening of the Canterbury r jockey Club's Autumn Meeting were nearly much better, in fact, than those predicted by the Government meteorologist, whose "squalls, showers, and cold weather" must have missed Ricearton in their travels. Despite the scarcity of North Island-owned horses, from across Cook Strait- were In strong force, Wellington provincebeing particularly well represented. Southern patrons also mustered in strong force; and altogether the attendance was fully up to the standard of previous years. The rain that had fallen at convenient intervals during the past fortnight left the racing track in splendid order, the going being fast, Ibut not hard enough to cause any inconvenience. Amongst the recentlyeffected improvements at the, course, one that came in for much favourable ■comment was the new totalisator build- - ing. This enabled . the staff to get through their work much more expeditiously than usual, -and also prevented any undue crowding at the selling wini<Hsws. Large fields contested most of .'the events, the Easter Handicap and . 'Bussley Plate being particularly well supported by owners. Details of the i racing are: — fTHE KILDARE HURDLE HANDICAP, of 250 sovs; second 50 sovs, third 25 sovs from the stake. Two miles. 2 D. H. Roberts's b g Kilmeny, by Kilcheran —Bulbul, 6: 11.5 (L. Christmas.) j Daylight Bill made the running from the ; start, and at the stand he was just clear ! of Cornelian and Kilmeny. Soon after pass- ' ing Cutts's Cornelian took charge from Daylight Bill, and already Opuka was hopelessly beaten. Cornelian pecked badly at the hurdle cpposite the seven-furlong post, and lost ground, while 'at the: next obstacle he nearly came doWn. This enabled Daylight Bill and K.-rffllny to close on him, and before reaching the entrance to the straight he retired beaten. Kilmeny then went on in front and, holding Daylight Bill*safe, won very easily by eight lengths. Cornelian, who started a "Very warm favourite, finished 13 lengths further back, with Goldseeker and Opuka beaten off. The field got away in good line, but at the I end of a furlong Rencontre 'and Bold Stroke fhad a slight advantage from Pariform and Honesty. Turning into the course proper, 'Hencontre had Bold Stroke as her nearest at- ' tendant, and this pair showed the way, al- ' masT" on terms, to the distance. There Ilen- • contre drew away and won by half a length '•from Bold Stroke. Two lengths further back icame Pariform, a head in front of Hyettus,. followed by Moulu, Downham, and Marsa. After a short delay at the post the 16

competitors were sent off in fairly good line. Sauci and Chudic wore the first to show out, and at the end of a furlong were racing on terms, juafc clear of Ohsono, Silver Shield, and Rinaldo. Expect was well back. So they ran round the top turn, and, with heads turned for home, Sauci was just clear of Chudic, Peg, Rinaldo, First Glance, and Expect. At the distance Sauci was beaten, and Chudic went on just clear of Expect. The leaders fought out a great finish, which resulted in favour of Chudic by a neck. Silver Shield was. a. length away, third, closely (followed by Rinaldo, Warstep, First" Glance,, land Autumnus. Halfway down the straight La Favourita was beaten, and Findhorn improved his position. Inside the distance Findhorn took second place, but he could not get to Wisebird, who won comfortably by half a length. Bee was third, a length back, followed lay Fastradi, La Favourita, and Cortes. Time, - lmin 0 4-ssec. NOTES ON THE RACING. The North Island-owned Cornelian was backed for the Kildare Hurdles as if the result was beyond doubt. After going six furlongs he drew away from Daylight Bill and already it looked a» if he had a mortgage over the result. Coming to the hurdle at the seven furlongs post, the favourite struck heavily and lost a lot of ground, while at the next obstacle he nearly unshipped his rider. This took all the dash out of him and he started to drop back. For a time it looked as if Daylight Bill would make a race of it .with Kilmeny, but the latter had his measure a long way from home and won easily. A very select field of ten two-year-olds saddled up for the Champagne Stakes, the unbeaten Downham, who looked really well, being elected: a staunch, favourite. There was also strong support for Moulu, which was hardly justified by his- for the Yaldnurst colt looked short of a few gallops. Backers had evidently overlooked Rencontre's fine race in the Jackson Stakes, for they let her go out at an outside price. Beginning smartly she was in front practically all the way, and scored comfortably by half a length from Bold Stroke, who had been her attendant all through. Favoured by the nor'-west wind, the race was cut out in the record time of lmin 12 4-ssec. i)ownham never threatened danger, and his display was not in keeping with the fine form he showed at Ricearton in the spring. Past form pointed to Valhalla as the best of good things for the Autumn Plate, and he was backed down to a very short price. Taking charge at the end of a furlong, the Hierarch gelding was never extended, and his performance was, a most impressive one. Chrysotis was one of the slowest to get under way, and for the first half of the- journey she was running last. Under the circumstances, her achievement of getting second place was full of merit, and should not be overlooked for future events. TO-MORROW'S PROSPECTS. GBEAT AUTUMN HANDICAP DAY. The flags will be flying at Ricearton again to-morrow, and everything points to the meeting being one of the most successful in the history of the Canterbury Jockey Club. Much interest is being evinced in the Great Autumn Handicap, which bears a particularly open appearance. Emperador, Bronze, Sea Pink, Thrax, Flora Macdonald, Warstep, and Ladoga are each sure to have a strong following, and can be relied on to run prominently. On track form Warstep and Thrax . seem to be well favoured, while as one of the few proved stayers, Sea Pink (who will be ridden by B. Deeley) is entitled to every respect. The field is likely to be made up as follows: — st. lb. Emperador (W. Young) .. .. 8 12 Bronze (A. Oliver) .. .. .. 810 Sea Pink (B. Deeley); . .. 8 5 Thrax (F. E. Jones) • ... .. 8 3 Flora Macdonald .. .. .. 8 3 Warstep (C: Emerson) . . . 7 13 Ladoga (O. Carmont) . . .. 7 9 Specialform . . . . . . 7 5 Gapon (E; M'Coll) .. 7 3 Kooya .. . . ...» .. 7 3 Peg (R. Berry) .. .. .. .. 6 9

The Challenge Stakes gives promise of providing a much better contest than usual, for amongst the likely competitors are such well-performed horses as Cherubini, Downham, Antumnus, Hyettus, and Bold Stroke. Other attractive items on to-morrow's card are the Autumn Nursery Handicap, Templeton Handicap, and Pinal Handicap, the weights for which will be declared this evening. - TEMPLAR.
