THE SENIOR CADETS.

Next month will see General Sir lan Hamilton, Inspector-General of Colonial Forces, in Canterbury, where he will carry out an inspection of Territorials and Senior Cadets. With this end in view good work is being carried out by all ranks. Up till their recent inspection by Colonel Smyth a fortnight ago the Cadets had done practically no ceremonial drill, but the good showing

they made on that occasion was very . 9 gratifying to their instructors. A few good daylight parades, devoted to ceremonial drill, should see the lads at the desired pitch of efficiency. T»ie Cadets' Band is making rapid

progress. Springing from the A'isit of the Cr nadian Cadets, the idea rapidly ! developed material form, and the arrival of the fifes, which are expected shortly, should add fuel to the band's enthusiasm. The cost of the instruments is being defrayed chiefly by public subscription, hut at least £4O is still required to make the band free of debt.

The old common belief amongst parents that children must at times have an attack of certain infectious diseases, and that the sooner the infection comes along the better, was referred to by Dr C. Savill Willis, principal medical officer to the Department of .Public Instruction in New South Wales, in a paper read before the public health section of the Australasian Medical Congress. As a consequence of this belief, he said, mothers were accustomed to purposely expose their children to infection. '-'ln these days," he added, " this is not done, as mothers know that it is. not. necessary for a child to have measles/ scarlet fever, and so ou; consequently more children now reach the school age' who are still susceptible to the various infectious -v diseases.-".
