Mr J. Harrison Jones, of Dunedin, arrived in Christchurch yesterday and is staying at the United Service Hotel.

The Kev. C. H. Laws, of this city, and the Eev. T. A. Joughin, of Leeston, left by the second express to-day for Dunedin in' order to attend the Methodist Conference, which opens there this week.

Mr W. A. Burns,, a New Zealander, has joined the J. L. Hall School of Aviation in England. It was in this school that Mr J. W. H. Scotland, the young aviator who is now making highly successful flights in the Dominion, earned his pilot's certificate. Mr H. Holland, Mayor of Christchurch, received the following wireless message from the Hon. W. A. Holman, Premier of New South Wales, on Saturday night from the Moeraki: "Wife and self leaving New Zealand with reluctance. Shall never forget enjoyable Christchurch visit and overwhelming kindness of friends there. Best wishes."

Mr Stuart Boss Macdonald, lately of the staff of the local Magistrate's Court, leaves to-morrow to take up the position of Clerk of the Court at Port Chalmers. , Mr Macdonald was to-day made the recipient of a presentation from his colleagues. Mr H. W. Bishop, S.M., who officiated, referred in terms of praise to Mr Macdonald's work performed during the last four years in Christchurch. Mr Hammond, late of Wellington, fills the vacancy on the Christchurch staff.

Mr J. M. Mitchell, of Sydenham, and the Misses Mitchell (2) a v re leaving on March 5 on a tour of the Continent and the Old Country. The Misses Mitchell will spend some time on the Continent in the study of music.

Earl and. Lady Grey will arrive in Christchurch on March 4 and will stay until the 6th. Earl Grey's health will not permit him to attend a banquet, which was proposed, but it is hoped he will be present at a reception to be given by the Victoria League.

Mr E. W. Burton, S.M., who has been appointed to Central Otago, left for the South this morning.

The Hon. R. Heaton Rhodes, Post-master-General and Minister of Public Health, is at present in Christchurch. He will attend at the Provincial Council Chambers from 11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. on Wednesday to receive deputations and transact departmental business.

On Saturday afternoon the officers and agents of the Government Insurance Department met at the residence of the district manager to bid good-bye to Mr I. K. Blenkhorn, late chief clerk at the Christchurch branch, he having been appointed to take charge of the new business branch at the Head Office, Wellington. Mr I. C. Prudhoe, on behalf of the staff, expressed appreciation of Mr Blenkhorn's services, and wished him success in his new sphere, and presented him with a silvermounted oak tray and afternoon tea service. Mr G. B. Hill has arrived from Wellington and has entered upon his duties as chief clerk in place of Mr Blenkhorn.

The Rt. Hon. Mr Massey left for Hastings last night to open the Cool Storage Company's new stores. He leaves for Wellington on Wednesday for a few days, and later goes to the South Island, visiting Nelson, the West Coast, and Central Otago.
