Out of 23 horses handicapped for the Dunedin Cup only 10 were accepted for.

Kilrain and Altear, both looking exceptionally well, passed through Christchurch on their way to Dunedin yesterday. The former is at present one of the most fancied candidates for the Dunedin Cup. A promising four-year-old sister to Mowbray will make her racing debut at the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting. After doing an attractive gallop at Wingatui on Friday morning Ogier pulled up decidedly lame, and is an unlikely starter at. -the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting. Quirinus also was sore after work on Friday. A large number of horses claiming engagement at the Dunedin Jockey Club's meeting left for the south, by special train this morning. Most of. the Riccart.on stables have one or more' representatives, the trainers with the largest teams being M. Hobbs, A. Cutts, and R. O'Donnell.

A shortage of horse boxes was experienced by several trainers, who had made arrangements to have their horses railed to Dunedin by special train this morning. After -e. tedious, delay at the siding several extra boxes were unearthed, but the majority of them were in such a filthy condition that the trainers were diffident about making use of them.

At the last meeting of the.Melbourne Trotting Club the New Zealand-bred Dillon Bell, driven by his owner, M. Edwards, showed to advantage in the Flying Handicap. Starting a slightly better favourite than Happy Thought he just got up in time to head her within a -few yards of the winning post.

Silver Monarch will be ridden in his hurdle engagement by the North Island horseman- N. Campbell,: The Wellington trained gelding is reported to~ be very well at present, and was jumping nicely before leaving Trentham. Triumphator jarred a tendon whilst working at Wingatui a few mornings ago, aud will not sport silk at the Dunedin J.C. meeting in consequence.

Information is to hand from Colombo that the great Australian sprinter. Volsloane has been purchased by a well-known English sportsman. His new owner intends giving V;olsloane an opportunity of measuring strides with the best sprinters an England. Jas, Pine is at present handling a J three-year-old gelding, the property of Mr Westerman. He is by JBed Bain' from Melinda, and is a likely looking sort, being particularly well grown. His sire. According to a Press Association message from Dunedin this morning, Parable beat Apnsea and. Gapon , over five furlongs on the- plough in Jmin ssec. Sister Radias showed to advantage with JPerin and Obs'ono over six furlongs,. run in Imin 17sec.
