FREE EDUCATION.

In an address at the distribution Of prizes to students of the Christchurch Technical College last night, the Director of the College, Mr J. H. Howell, said: — . "Jt is, I think, urgent that facilities for free education should be given to all who are prepared to avail themselves of them, quite irrespective of the fact whether they wish to prepare for an office, a skilled trade, or any form of useful occupation. As is well known a great deal has been done in the United States by the enterprise of private firms to give special training to their employees. I am convinced that unless yre are to resort to a system •of compulsory continuation, education during the daytime, such as adopted in some of the more progressive German towns, "vae shall make no great headway until the employers recognise that technical training is of such monetary value that it will pay them to give their emjployees the facilities necessary to take full advantage of it."
