NEWCASTLE COAL TRADE.
Per United Press Association. By Electric Telegraph. — Copyright. SYDNEY, Sept. 2. Notices of the reduction in the price of coal are posted at the pits. The Miners' Federation takes legal advice on thfe question of reducing the hewing rate. Sir W. McMillan, in an address on preferential trade, declared that the scheme was too ridiculous for sober argument. It was. absolutely impracticable. Instead of building up and consolidating the Empire it will, if over attempted, be the death of national union. MELBOURNE, Sept. 2. The State Schools Board of Advice has resolved to abolish the cane and substitute the strap as the instrument of corporal punishment. Major-General Hutton has impressed on the Federal Government the necessity for establishing a small arms factory _
