TRAFFIC IN BABIES.
REVELATIONS IN CHICAGO. CHIOAUO, April 21. The Legislative Committee which is inquiring into • the management of the charity organisations of the city has disclosed further extraordinary trade m infants. It was found that an under.st£od arrangement existed between doctors and maternity homes. Chicago was practically the clearing-house for the supply of babies to childless people m the middle Western States. The demand was principally for orphan babies, and three times the number could be S laced m comfortable homes. Dr. riney, head of one sanitorium, the committee learned, #ised to contract with unmarried patients «o that after their children were born the mothers were hired out as wet-nurses m wealthy families. Meanwhile their own children, deprived' of their natural food, were brought up on artificial foods. DrY Wood, principal of a maternity institution, eaid; that friendless girls were made to sign a contract giving up all rights to their babies.
