Bible in Schools. TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — On the subject of introducing the Bible into the public schools, the Rev. Mr Fraser asks the question, "Do they want the State to give the knowledge of the Bible as a- piece of literature? If they demanded it to be taught as the Word of God, then they would be logical. Now, surely there is no doubt we as a Christian colony require it to be taught as of God's word, not as mere literature, and as I was taught in the parish school in Scotland. We had a reading lesson from the New Testament, I think, if I remember right, daily. Why should it be considered a remarkable thing to introduce the New Testament into public schools, to be read in and by the school classes as a lesson in the art of reading in the ordinary way, aud enly, mind, by one class per day, thus imparting, as i?uch, information of the Christian rule of faith? In my humble opinion, in doing this we should be only acting as a. Christian people should do, if we are to be logical. The Jews give information m their schools from the Old Testament [This is not correct. Ouij Jewish fellow subjects send their children to the public schools, and the rabbi imparts a knowledge of the scriptures. — Ed.] ; the Chinese alsc learn from Confucius, and the Hindoo from Buddha. Aie we, the Christian people, to do different? By all means leij us provide the young and rising generation with the New Testament of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, and thus be consistent as a Christian people, notwithstanding at the present both Education Board and Parliament object to do so. — I am, etc., A PRESBYTERIAN. Horseshoe Bend, Molyneux River, November 28.
