November 8. — The local school wiil undergo it* annual examination on Wednesday, 17th in-.t. The examination will be conducted by Inspector Goyan.— l'he staging of the operetta " L'rial by Jury" by the Roxburgh Or hestral Society has been postponed till M*rch 1593 on account of the fruit seasou preventing m-mbers from attending rehearsals — The Gun Club hod the second of the championship shooting matches on Tuesday, Prince of W ales' s Birthday, and ou the same evening the Glee Club hold their annual concart. — The cricket season was opened on Thursday afternoon by a prac'ice, to which nine or ten members lolled up. I understand cricket has been takeu up enthusiastically at Miller's Flat. — An organ recital is ou the cards for Thursday evening in St. James's Church. It is to be conducted by Mr J Hayes, Inspector of Mines, who will be assißted by some of our local amateur*.— On Saturday evening the monthly meeting of the Fruit-growers' Company takes place, and also a meeting of the Joclcev Club to decide on the date of the annual races. — The sittings of the Warden's and S.M.s Courts on Thursday wi'l be light.— The raiDfall for October was 5"62 in, rain falling on 22 days. The rainfall for September was oS2in.

JFiia/D Sports. — A committee meeting of the Athletic Sports Club was held on Saturday evening 1 , when a good deal of business in connection with the forthcoming pports waa transacted. It was decided, on the motion of Messrs R. George and Winchester, to expend £2 in improving the track in places untouched by the Cycling Club, who were experimenting with clay and coal slack at the north end, where the track is pretty bad.— Bicycles are getting very common— so much so that it will soon be the thing not to have one. Several bicycles have entered this diatiict lately, and quite a number have gone up country. The sports on Boxing Day are expected to be particularly attractive, especially iv the cycling events. The membership roll of the loCil cycling club ought to b» very satisfactory this season — The handicaps for the Cromwell Caledonian sports on Tuesday, 9th inst., give satisfaction io most of the rWers.- W. George and T. P. Michell, captain and deputy-captain respectively, are going to compete. The former ride* an 1897 Royal Esfield geared to 88in, and the latter's mount, a Raglan, is geared ti 80i<i.

Borough Council. — At the usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council on Thursday evening Jast the tender of Mr T. Stadden for the construction of the new waterworks dam, stone and concrete, was accepted at £120 7s. There was one oth u r tender, by Mr Rees, for JSI6S 15s. There are 7Si cubic yardi of masonry, the mortar for which will consist of two parts of sand to one of cement. The, darn is to be finished within six weeks from the signing of the contract.

Valedictory. — On Sunday morning the Rev. Mr Kdwards conducted his farewell service in St. James's Anglican Church. Before commencing the sermon, he said that all present were aware that that evening was the lust occasion on which he would hold services in the church. He did not intend to say much on personal matter*?, or to enter into his reasons for sending in his resignation. Ha could say with thankfulness that durii g the two years and three months in which he had officiated in St. Jame->'s he had met with nothing but kindness and cordiality from every member of the congregation. His relations with the vestry were of the pleasantear, and matters went .as smooth as clock-work. Wherever he went he would always entertain pleasant recollections of his monthly visit to this part of his parish, which he used always to look forward to. He conld not take leave of his parishioners without expressing his appreciation of the kindness he bad met with from one and all. Mr V.& wards thenproceeded with the sermon, taking bis text from the third chapter of the Gospsl according to St. John, at the 16th verse. The attendance at both morniDg and evening cervices was very large.
