Notes from Lyell.

Lyell, November 5. The following is the mine manager's report for the week from the Alpine .Extended Gold Mining Company :—": — " The No. 10 main level has been extended south for -A distance of 10ft, which now makes the total extension 179 ft. The reef, continues the same 'size as last reported, 'but the driving has been considerably harder than before. Work in the stopes has been continued during the week without chango in size of the reef. The No. 10 level has been driven north a distance of 15ft, making the total distance extended 79ft. On Thursday stone came in in the bottom of the drive, the size of the same being about 2ft Sin ;
but it is widening going north. It does not; however, live more than 2ft above the floor of the drive.. The stone coutains a little "gold. In accordance with instructions .received, I started yesterday to .sink a winze on the branch reef towards the north end of No. 10 level. I have centied up the north winze at the bottom of No. 9 level, preparatory to lettmg the stone down, and I have started to break out the stone left in the stopss above-.the same level.. The reef there is.froni sft to 9ft in width. We have continued to break out stone from the cross-reeHn the intermediate between Nos. 7 and 6 level. The reef varies in wid'h from 2ft to 3ft, and we arestoping it out to a height of J2ft. Seventy tons of quarts have been sent to the battery during the weekl The following is the result of ihe month's clean-iiiß-up on Saturday last :— 3lO tons stone yielded 4240z amalgam ; weight of retorted gold, IC6 >z ldwt.
Notes' from Auckland. % Auckland, November 5. Forty-five loads of quartz were crushed by the' Nonpareil gol.l mine for 55az retorted gold. The quartz was taken solely from the Liverpool reef.
