In the Review of Revfews for October M«; Stead dealt with "Equality," the new book' written by Edward Bellamy, the author of " Looking .Backward." "Equality" has met with general condemnation both in America and England, but notwithat»ndiug^ that Mr Stead nukes & most interesting narrative in his summary of the book, and one which will, wev think, induce many to read the complete work w.b.o would otherwise have passed it by. Hall Caine'B new work "The Christian" is the subject of a second article, which also betrays the masterh&nd of Mr Stead himself. " Fights for the Flag," the Rev. W. H. Pitchett's engrossingly interesting historical narrative, deals with Lord Anton and the Centurion. Under the title " A Relic of the Past " * representation is given of the Wolverine, *• a 17-gun corvette, onoe the flagship of Commodore Hoskins on the Australian station, and famous in her day for speed and grace, which now lies a broken wreck on the Norlh Shoiv, Auckland." The reproductions of the month's cartoons are -more than usually intcraatiug, and the rest pf the content.sare up to the average. '. T « Austral Light for "November contains! A good deal of -pleasant and instructive, reading. Marion Miller contributes a poem of considerable merit,. entitled " The Black Spur " ; "On the Banks of the Swan Itivar," an Australian serial, by Una R.«, is continued; and J. T. P. O'Mbara has an Australian sketob) "On the Tramp." The Key. P. O'Doherfcy, M'.R I A., reviews at some .length Lughaidh O'Cle'ry'o •'Life of Hugh TUe O'Donnsll, Prince of Tit Connell (1586-1602)." The remainder of ttie I* contents -are of interest priocipally to church people. : " A Land of Promise " is the taking title of a brochure on the advantages of Westralia as a | field for immigration, written by Trant Chambers and published under the authority of the West Australian Government. A very" complete and useful map of the huge and practically undeveloped tract of land which the colony embraces is given as a frontispiece, and the information given iv the 60 pages which comprise the pamphlet is as varied and exbau«tive as it is possible to make it in tha space afc disposal. The pamphlet in to be freely distributed in the Home country, and »hould ba the means of bringing out^a number of settlers. "The Degeneration of Liberalism in New Zejdand," by " A Citizen," is the title of a pamphlet comprising a series of papers reprinted from the Wellington Post. The views «xpres»ed are worthy of the deepest confederation at the hands of nil who have their country's good a.t heart, and we shall probably have a word or two to t ay on the subject in due time iv our leading columns. The Colonial Inventor for November is to hand. The contents, as usual, are practical and interesting, with a scientific leaning. Illustrations are given of Bodky's pasteurising plant in Wellington, of *n elecfcticul street cab, a gr'amaphoue, the transporter on"Weljingtofa whart.'and a nii&iber of minor interesting.'inventkns and contrivances. ' ; ' . The cheap English weekliea— and their name is.legion— dojiot seem to have interfered witlk the 'successful careers; of their more expensive J forerunners, if -we may -judge by the health j look of some of t\& high- : cla.88 sixpenny ' paper* which- reach the colonies. Among the latter £he Gentlewoman takes a very high place. The issue for September 25 is. a really excellent number, judged either from a literary of a pictorial point of view. The various articles i and sketches ate all of a more or less interestj ing character to women, and as the paper is capitally illustrated and advertised it forms a. really welcome addition to the attractions of the ! home circle. A serial tale, "Corleone," by F. j Marion Crawford, in running.throughthe currenfr ■• volume.
