GORE.

November 11.— Nothing could have been better than what we have had down here this last week —a glorious hot day last Tuesday, a warm rain all next day and on Thursday morning, and then fine and hot weather ever since, with a light shower yesterday evening. Everything growing as it by Temperance Lectures.— Mr Coad, lecturer for 'the United Kingdom Alliance, has been lecturing here. His first lecture was on Tuesday' last, when the local temperance societies formed a procession; to the Town Hall before the lecture. The attendances at all three lectures were good, considering that one night was wetr "The Wesleyan choir pro* vided music and were a great help to the success of the lectures. E. M. Court.— The audience last Monday was unusually large, the attraction being a rabbit inspector's case against Mr G. M. Bell, of Wantwood, who not only defended the case, but conducted bis own defence. Nearly three hours were occupied in taking the evidence of a. host of witnesses. The Besident Magistrate fined Mr Bell £5 and costs (about another £5), remarking tb^ as the act provided that if. as had been proved in this caae, the opinion of the inspector was that the defendant had not sufficiently cleared his land of rabbits, there was no option but to inflict a fine. The Gas Scheme Again.— At the time of writing last week's letter the council had practically dismissed the solicitor who was the first to give them the unpalatable opiniQn that the agreement they wanted to seal was illegal. It now turns out that the second and third lawyers consulted by the council agree with the first. The mayor has since "called for tendeis" for lighting the streets with gas, but as only four days have been given for tenders to be put in the bona fides of this "calling for tenders " may very reasonably be questioned. Further developments are expected.
