Few modern industries havo shown greater activity of late years than that of Pianoforte making; tßei advances of scientific knowledge and mechanical skill havo resulted in the greatest perfection of these in*' struments. It is only, however, by the employment of an enormous capital that a manufacturer can command all the costly machinery and materials necessary for the production of the high class piano of modern times, and hence it is that amongst the many thousands of English makers, the few who have achieved a sameor reputation can be easily counted upon the fingers, and these are firms of great magnitude and wealth. The same we find to be the case in rerogard to foreign manufacturers. Amongst the countless German and French pianoforte makers there are comparatively few who stand preeminent amongst their compeers. A prejudice exists against foreign pianos, it being asserted that they do not last j that many of them do not last is an undoubted faot, but it is as unfair to condemn all foreign pianos because many of them do not wear, as it would be to oondemnall English pianos for the same reason. We take this opportunity ef re« minding customers of the advantages our Establishment offers for the selection of these instruments. We never show less than between twenty and thirty by different makers of known reputation, wbioh we place in fair competition with > . each other, so that customers may judge for themselves; we also guarantee to exohange any instrument purchased from us that does not give satisfaction.
