WAITAKI JOCKEY CLUB RAGES.

(FROH OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Oamaru, October 2nd. The Waitaki Jockey Club «v-re blessed with glorious weafcfev lor the first of their two day*.' annual race maatiog, which commenced to-day at Duntroou ; f..r though a few drops of rain fell just before the first race {started, the sun shone out brightly during the remainder of the day. The attendance was not nearly bo large a 9 at the previous meetings of the Club, and by far the greatwr proportion of the spectators were country residents. There was very little betting over the seveial eveatP, the principal portion of tbe speculation taking the form of sweeps. The sport provided was very good indeed, and Mr Moore is to be complimented upon his haudicaps, *.he horses being brought well together at the finishes. All the arrangements ware good, and were carried out in a businesslike manner. There were no vexatiiu" delays. Nearly all the events were started well up to time. Toe utmost good order prevailed, and everything passed off very satisfactorily. In the Maiden Plate race, Mr O'Brieu's little filly, Fenella. proved too good for tbe company, and won with the greatf est ease. Little John ran very well for some | distance, but he wa3 ahort of work, and could not go the distance Black Prince, the hurdleracer, showed a fair amount of foot, but lost considerable ground at the start. The County Plate brought four horses to the post, and an excellent race took olace, more eupßcially between Rangatira and York. Old Blue Peter ran a very good horse for about a mile, but was then dead beaten, and had' to struggle home. The Cup race was undoubtedly the race of the day. Five horses started, and a capital race ensued, Maritana cut out the running at a good pace, and, one by one, cut down Unknown, Chancellor, and Libeller, but when entering the straight Pinfire came away, and won a good race. The Trotting Match wbb fairlycontested, but the favourite, Charlie, disappointed his admirers by trotting in very poor form, while Little Nell broke saveral times, and spoiled a very fair chance. The Selling Race wag contested by a fine field of 10, but Fenellft had a very easy conquest, winning both heats very comfortably. In the first, Castout wai second and Celoeno third ; in the second, Kangaroo occupied second place and Castout the third. The following are tho results : — SIACOBN Phatb of 30 Bova. ,One mile and a hilf. Weight for ape Open to all horMS which never won an advertised race. Mr D O'Brien's b f Fenelln, 3 yrs . . Parsing the stand the first time, Ft-nella. hard held, was still run* ning firat, Little John coming mxt and running very well, whilst Loyalty occupied third place, slightly in advance of Magician and Black Prince: At the end of ft mile Black Prince began to go up, and pawing Magician, Loyalty, aud Little John, took second place. There were several false starts before the torses could be got away. In the first York iran some distance before he could be putted up, and in the second Rangatira had a short spin. Eventually they were all sent away pretty well together, Playboy having slightly the worst of the start. Bine Peter at once made the running at a good pace, York lying second, and 'Raagatira third In this order they passed the grand stand the first time York, being hard 'held, Playboy a long way in the rear. After the first mile and a quarter bad been traversed York went to the front, followed by Rangavtira, Blue Peter falling back into third (place. York looked like winning, but when nearing 'the straight Rangatira came up, and the two -raced together for some distance. The Sydney 'horse stayed tbe best, and though the whip was applied to York. After going a short distanca Maritana took the lead, but was shortly challenged by Unknown, who vainly endeavoured to get to the front. The others were running in a cluster. "When h«lf a mile had been travelled, Chancellor began to fall back, while Libeller and Pinfire closed upon the leaders a little. This order was still maintained for a quarter of a mile, when Chancellor again came up, aud Tvhen passing the stand at the end of the first mile, was running second to Maritana ; Pinfire was third, Libeller fourth, and Unknown, evidently beaten, last. At the back of the course the whole of tho horses were in a cluster, and a grand race took place. Libeller, when a quarter of a mile from home, made a dash, but «ould sot g&t away from the others. Maritana soon overhauled him, and apparently had the race won. PinfLro aud Chancellor then came with a rush, and a desperate race took place.
