In the Council to day, after tue transaction of routine bu<-inesn, The Hon. Mr CHAMBERLAIN asked i£ the Government intended to introduce any measure for the protection of local industrit s. He said a Protective policy wos necessary to the prosperity of the country — (No, no.) The Hon. Colonel WHITMORE said the Government intended to refer the whole subject to a Select Committee. PDBLIC TRUSTEE. The Hon. Mr HOLMES moved for a return from the Public Trust Office under tho Public Trustee Act He expressed bit belirf that had there been a public trustee in England as the*© was here, the ruin of many of the perrons by the failure of the Ci'y of Glasgow Bank would not have been caused. The Hon. Mr WATERHOUSE said the ftppoint ment of a public trustee was outrid« the baeincs of tbe Government. Had ther« been a public trustee in England, the Government would have been responsible for the whola cf the losses of thu Glasgow Bank. The motion was carried, NEW BIIXS. The Intestate Estates Bill (Hon. Mr Wilson) waa read a firet time, and the ancond roadinj ordered for Tuesday. NATIVE AFFAIBS. A Native Affairs Camoiitted of fight members was appointed on the motion of the Hon. Captain FRASER. The selection was made by ballot.
ADJOURNMENT. The Couucil adjourned at 4 p.m.
