VISIT OF THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH TO OTAGO.
j The following correspondence as to His Royal Highness, the Duke of ijdinburgh, visiting Otago, which has passed between J His Honor, the Superintendent, and the - Colonial Secretary, has been handed to us for publication. Province of Otago, N.Z., Superintendent's Office, ' Dunedin, 19th Oct. 1867. Sir — I have the honor to state that very general desire is being expressed throughout this Province that it should be honored 'with a visit of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. " . . . 1 have therefore to request that you will be good enough to inform me what probability there is of such being the case, and ■whether any portion of the LSOOO voted by the General Assembly is being reserved for i the purpose. I have no doubt that, should the amount at the disposal of tae General Government be insufficient, this Province will be happy to supplement it, or indeed, to make any arrangements which you may deem desirable, and which may be pleasing to Hia Royal Highness. Having some thoughts of calling the Provincial Council together shortly, I shall be obliged by receiving a reply at your earliest convenience. — I have, &c, James Macandrew, Superintendent. The Hon. the Colonial Secretary, Wellington.
Colonial Secretary's Office, Wellington, 25th Oct., 1867. Sir— l have to acknowledge the receipt of your Honor's letter, No. 8116, of the 19th inst., and to state that the Government has no information with respect to the intended visit of His Royal Highness the Uuke of Edinburgh to New Zealand, beyond what is conveyed in the despatches from the Secretary of State, numbered and dated respectively No. 19 of the Ist of May, and 39 of the 26th of June last, and presented during the recent session to the Legislature, which only state generally that His Royal Highness will only visit Auckland and Wellington. Should it be found, on the arrival of His Royal Highness, that his other engagements would admit it, he will be advised to visit the principal settlements, including Otago, ia the Southern Island. Until more is known of the probable stay which His Royal Highness will make in this Colony, and whether he will be able to travel through the country, and how many places he will visit, it is impossible to state how the funds voted for his reception will be available for expenditure in any one place. — I have, &c,
E. W. Stafford. His Honor the Superintendent, Otago.
