Tresspass by Bookmakers.
IMPRISONMENT WITHOUT OPTION
At the Christdhurch Polioe Court on Saturday, J. Franklin, a bookmaker, was fined £15 on two charges of trespassing on Riccarton racecourse ; Thomas Houlivan, £30, on three charges; Mick Hyslop, £15 on two charges; J. Smith £30 on three charges ; E. Harrison and P. tiheehan £5 each. Charges against G. Pearce and T. Tarhey were "dismissed, for there was a question as to whether bookmakers' clerks were liable to the provisions of the club's regulation*. The fines amounted to £110. The Magistrate (Mr Bishop) said he could find very little excuse for the commission of the offence, but there was the position that particular matters affecting the right to enter Riccarton racecourse had been fair matters for dispute m a higher court. On that account he would look upon the cases as if they were new ones. However, these difficulties had now been whittled away, and m future he would not consider the question of how he should deal with bookmakers from the point of view of previous off jnces, He would consider that * such cases could only be met by a terra of imprisonment. " I shall inflict no fines m the future," his Worship said." They can take that intimation from me. Future cases of this kind will be dealt with by me on the lines I have indicated, and they can take the risk if they like,"
