Fatal Accident at Winton Races.

JOCKEY KILLED. A fatal acoident occurred at the Winton races on Thursday, hy which a jockey named Joseph Bromby, lost his life. It appears that Bromby was riding Mr W. Paul's mare, Visionary, m the Winton Cup, the distance being one mile and a-half, and there were three other starters — Juniper, Delarey, • and Sirius. Over a mile had been j covered, and Sirius was leading, Vis- j ionary running second, several lengths | away, Juniper third, and Delarey last. \ All were m single file, and each separated by some little distance, so that there can be no suggestion that any interference was responsible for the acoident. Passing a post .about a quarter of a toile froni' the judge's box, Visionary ran too close, and-Bro'mby's head came m violent contact with the post. The unfortunate lad's skull was simply smashed m, and death must have been instantaneous. From the position of the wound, which was on the crown of the head, slightly to the left side, it would seem that Bromby must have been crouching forward, slightly on the left side, and that he did not see the post, which is close to the turn of the course into the straight. Dr. Green, who was on the course, was m attendance shortly after the accident, but of course could do nothing. The deceased, who was about 19 years old, was a son of Mr William Bromby, fisherman, of Biverton. He was very popular with his mates, and was looked upon as a promising rider.
