The fine weather we have boeui-x---periencing of late has given the farmers a good chunce to get on with their ploughing, and present indications point to an early spring. Messrs Valli Bros., Taylor, and Sheddan are all busy m different parts of the district drain ploughing with their traction engines. A bazaar, m aid of tbe funds of the Nightcaps Brass Band is to be held m Griffin's Hall, Nightcap*, on the 3rd, 4th and sth August, and, judging by the way the ladies of ihe township are working, the affair^prom.ses to be a great success. Regret is expressed here at the resignation of Lieut. Newton, who has been m command of the local division of the Wallace Mounted Rifles for the past four yoars. He was a painstaking and energetic officer, and one of the most popular m the corps. The company were asked to appoint a successor to him at the adjourned annual meeting, which took place! m the .Town Hall, Otautau, on Friday last. A grand military ball took place afterwards. Local coursing enthusiasts have been having a good time lately, and Messrs Bates, Keen, Blomfield and Ait ken have been particulary successful The local steeplechase horse, Manazona, leaves this week for Christchurch to compete m the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase. His owner, Mr Clifford, has shown great enterprise m taking his horse so far afield, and it is to be hoped that he will meet with the success, he deserves. The Wairio jockey, C. Church, goes m charge of the horse, and will ride him m his engagements.' Some malicious persons have recently been sending fioticious reports of various local functions to different newspapers m Southland, and ridiculifig "iiiany local residents.
