Birchwood Hounds.

(From our own correspondent.)

On Friday last, the 14th inst, the Birchwood Hunt Club held their annual run at Wrev's Bush: As the Wairio-Wrey's Bush Ploughing Match Association were holding their ploughing match on that date, a large attendance resulted. . About SI 90 p.m. the drag \yaslaid qn and the hound* were soon iti full cry, and, although some stiff country had to be negotiated, a gbod nuuiber arrived safely at the kill. Spills were fairly numerous, and J noticed "several empty saddles at the various obstacles. However, none of the riders were seriously injured, although Messrs McAnally, Gately and D. C. Mckenzie vpere severely shaken, a/id I fancy sonici. qf the horses .will rei quire to be laid up for. repairs. At the conclusion of the run, Mr McAnally, on behalf of the Hunt Club, thanked the owners of the land hunted over — Messrs Calder, Finn, Holloran, Egan and Bradley, after which refreshments, kindly provided by the residents, were partaken of. Following are some of-those whom I noticed close up at the finish ; — The Huntsman, (Ur A. Mclvor}, on The Karl, The Whip, (Mr M. Flynn), on Napper Sandy, the acting- Master, (Mr T. Clifford), on The Rose, and Messrs A. Messent on Czar, M. Egan qn PJQUgllbay, 1 , Mass on Seldom Fed, J. Beck on Hartwdod, B. Dickson qn Qlencoe, P. tycAhally qn Sub Rosa, R. Ralfdn qn Rqby t, A. McKenzie on Takitimo, T. Kirkßatrick on Ocean Shell, C- Flynn on Sjcutcher, M. *Bgan en White Thome, M. J. Egan ea Gentle Annie, M. Power on Silver; Ring, M. Hall *.on Comeaway, J. i Hall on Darkie, A. Gatejv on Firefly, J. Dodds on Woodlaw, W. Smith on Misfortune, A. Chrystall on Charlton, J Thomoson on Snapshot, J. Swale qn Happy Jack, C. J£een pn Daisy Bell, P. Finn pn Tpmmy, W. Finn on Jack, H. Grow on Gladsome, W. Crow on Piebald, J. Frew on Somersault, J. Kirkwqpd on Trilby, and J. Gateiy on Cicero, At the conclusion qf- the run a prize, given' by, -'the 'Ploughing. Match Committee for the besth*unter over three jumps, was very keenly I competed for. The Messrs T, Prendcrgast, J, Affreck, and J.

Ritchie, must have had some difficulty m arriving at their decision, and I think this difficulty would have been got over easily if the jumps had been a bit stiffer. Some of the competitors adopted the somewhat unsports manlike methods of keeping their horses fresh for the contest by not hunting them iv the second run of the liunt, did.^ing through gates, etc, ■uiJ I think thnt il the committee intend to give prizes m future, the}' should insist that all competitors should be fairly hunted. The following is the result of the competition : — Mr J. Swale's Happy Jack (ovnr_r), I ; Mr A. Gerrard's Snapshot (owner), 2; Mr M. Flynn's Napper Sandy (owner), 3 ; Mr A. Gerrard's Charlton (Thompson") 4. Al o competed : — Kean's St. Kooringa, Beck's Hartwood, Kean's Selection, M> Menamen's Uincfwaj^ Egan's Ploughboy, Slieedy's Zechan, Sutherland's Highland Lad, Moss's Seldom Fed, and McMenamen's Ironworker. Some amusement was caused by the efforts of Zeehan's rider to get his mount over the jumps, and after he had succeeded, he was greeted with a round of applause.
