OTAGO UNIVERSITY

INTER-FACULTY SPORTS. The twelfth annual sports of the Otago , University Amateur Athletic Club, were held at Oarisbrook on Saturday The bleak, heavy wind, with its accompanying rain and hail storms made tho conditions the very - worst possible, and few spectators ventured to the ground, only the merest sprinkling finding the welcome shelter of the grand stand, which, fortunately, is so situated that its back its turned to the stormy quarter, leaving those present a clear view of the proceedings under the best conditions obtainable. Whether the official and competitors most deserve praise or blame for going on with tho meeting might be a difficult question to resolve, as many things have to. be taken into 'consideration, but the courage of the contestants and the excellence of their performances despite the extreme cold from which they were evidently suffering, especially in such events as the long and high jumps, where they were kept standing about, there can be no doubt. The turf, of course, was in a sodden, unpleasant, and altogether ainfavourable condition, yet the times recorded, taking them as a whole, were good, and would undoubtdely have been much bettered on a fine day, with the result that several new records might have been established. In the long jump, indeed, a new record was established, R. Harris clearing 20ft 7in, as against R. L. Withers 20ft sin in 1913. Early in the proceedings a heavy shower caused officials and competitors to seek tho shelter of the pavilion, and during the afternoon tea adjournment heavy hail fell, with a I consequent prolongment of that welcome interval. Though more heavy rain foil later the events were kept going and the proceedings closed beforo half-past 5, tho tug-cf-war and relay race being abandoned. The championship points resulted in favour of the medical faculty by a big margin. Following were the results: — I 100 YARDS CHAMPIONSHIP. Record, R. L. Christie (1913), 10 3.ssec.
