FIRES.
(P>:r. I'xited Pp.kss Associatiok.) HASTINGS, April 24. At midnight a lire was discovered in Phillips and Wright's furniture factory. In 30 minutes the place was in ruins. The lire spread to Hallinan's (blacksmith) cottage, and the inmates were rescued by the police. The insurances on the factory ait unavailable, but cover less than half tho lo=s, which is considerable. Hainan's collage was insured fov £150 in the I'htenix and the furniture for £75 in the Standard. The total insurances £01' Phillips and Wright's building, stock, and machinery are £1000 in the North Queensland office.. Tho loss is estimated at £2000. A five-roomed houso iu Melbourne stieet, South Dunedin, owned bv Mr Govvder, of Walker street, and occupied by Mrs Wyatt, was partially destroyed by tiro at 2.30 a.m. on Saturday. The South Dunedin Fire Brigade arrived promptly 011 the scene and- prevented the-Maw; from spreading to Mr Warren's house next door. The cause of the outbreak is unknown. The house was insured for £150 in the Xew Zealand office and the furniture in tho Royal olfieo for £160.
