Speaking before fiio St. George's Society, Admiral Poore said that ho had come to the conclusion, far many reasbns, that, a, ilotilla, not only for its actual fighting value, but also for its moral effect, was necessary ->f in case of war tho Imperial squadron had to be withdrawn, lie, however, advocated Imperial control, for ho regarded dual control as dangerous., Lord Dudley endorsed' the Admiral's views. He said l -he did net belicvo they would ever induce the country to give an adequate monetary contribution to tho Imperial Navy. The present amount was ? mere drop in the bucket. It would be necessary to give two or three millions, and it was not likely they would be able lo give that sum without obtaining what/ was impossible—a voice in tho manage-, men!-, or control of that policy. Ho believed- they would get far more from | Australia in tlio way of ships and men.
