The Auckland Gas Company at its half-yearly meeting to-day adopted the report recommending a dividend of 3s 3d per, share upon paid-up shares and 4s 3d upon those partly paid up. It was decided to adhere to the previous decision not to acknowledge any liability in regard to the alleged error by which tbe City Council valuation was reduced from £3500 to £1500. The committee of the Chamber of Commerce have decided to call the attention of the Government to the necessity for the protection of growing flax. They have further passed a resolution suggesting that any respectable applicant should be granted a bottle license upon similar terms now prevailing in Otago, empowering him to sell wine, cider, sherry, or mead in bottles in quantities not exceeding 2gals. The Eev. Father Becker, of Rotorua, has been appointed to sucoeed the late Father M'Donald in charge of the Maori Mission north of Auckland. The settlers of the Great Barrier Island, who have been for some time without regular communication with Auckland, bave decided to fask the Government for a subsidy of £350 per annum for a steam service. At a meeting of residents of Fort Albert and surrounding districts it was resolved to recommend that any money devoted to railway extension in the North should be spent on the railway from Helensville north, and that the West Coast road have the first share of money voted for roads north of Auckland. Wanganui, July 28. Captain Cummins, of the fire brigade, was presented by the mayor to-night at a large public meeting with a purse of 200aovs and an illuminated address. A meeting of about 400 persons this evening passed resolutions requesting members of Parliament to support the bill for the prohibition of public house licenses by a popular vote without compensation. Mr R. Beattie, of Black, Beattie, and Co., presided. Mr T. W. Glover; and the Key. L. M. Isitt were the principal speakers. Frederick Marßland Hadfield, formerly of tbe City Hotel, was committed for trial to-day on three charges of forging the name of William Goodwin to cheques on the Bank of New South Wales aggregating £132. Joseph Harrop was charged with him, but dismissed. All the cheques were cashed at the bank. There are seven more charges against Hadfield, in two of which Harrop is implicated. James Campbell, formerly of Acland and Campbell, and for sis: years auctioneer for the National Mortgage and Agency Company, who is leaving for Gisborne, was to-day presented with a purse of sovereigns, in tbe presence of a large and representative gathering. A meeting of wool buyers has decided that holding wool sales at Ashburtou, Bangiora, and Amberley is opposed to the best interests of buyers and sellers. The meeting pledged itself to use the utmost endeavours to centralise the sales in Ohristchurcb.
