THE SEAMEN'S UNION. c T^ e E; erald comments severely on the refusal ot the beamen's Union to admit the men discharged from the Northern Steamship Company s steamers to make room for union men. It says that the principal dishonour attaches to the Australian Steamship Owners' Association, me beamen s Union is declared to be unworthy of sympatny and support from the public, and its action in this matter declared to be cruel and tyrannical.

LUNATIC ASYLUM MANAGEMENT. Mr Hull, au attendant at the Auckland Lunatic Asylum, has just completed a year's engagement at that institution, and has severed his connection with the asylum. It is stated that during the period of his service Hull took copious notes of incidents that occurred, and generally of the manner in which the institution is conducted, and it is understood that he is in a. position to throw a flood of light upon the treatment of the insane. It does not appear in what shape these revelations will be published. THE NIGHTSOIL CONTRACT.

The reason why the offer of Mr White to dessicate the nightsoil was accepted by the corporation instead of that of Messrs Langdon and Co., Dunedin, was that Mr White was prepared to deposit £50 and commence at oncewhereas Messrs Langdon and Co, would not be prepared to receive till three months hence, and to commence manufacturing within six months. Messrs Langdon and Co. were prepared to enter ma £100 bond to take nigbxsoil for six years after the expiry of the present contract
