GENERAL SUMMARY.

London, July 30th.

Heavy rains continue in England, and extensive blight prevails in many parts, causing apprehensions regarding the harvest. Vesuvius is an active state of eruption. An earthquake at Smyrna and the neighbourhood caused the loss of several lives, throwing down many houses. : Princess Louise intends to return with Prince Leopold from Canada early in August Her Royal Highness has been suffering ever since her depaiture for the Tapedin ealmonfisbicg expedition. Her illness is believed by her physicians to be the result of the sleigh accident last winter. No local affection shows itself, but the entire nervous system is upset She is advised to visit the German springs, after which she will spend some time in England before her return to Canada. .

The Australian liner Hydaspes, while off Dover, was run into on the 17th by the steamer Centurion. The Hjdaspes had 40 passengers and * crew of 25, with a general cargo. The collision occurred during a dense fog. _ The Hydaspes was struck amidships. In 10 minutes the deck blew up, and she went down. The Sassengers and crew were taken by the (steamer (over. Th«y lost everything, but were all uninjured except a young lady, who hurt her hand. The captain, crew, and passengers of the Hydaspes behaved admirably.
