GANE MAKES THE PACE

Cycling

Takes Honors From Scratch (From "N.Z. Truth's" "Wellington Rep.) JV/fILTON GANE, from scratch mark. *™ pedalled home m fastest time m the Wellington provincial 50-mlle cycle championship. Gane, who finished fifth, is a consistently good performer, and will take further honors during the season. To A. Toomer go the honors of being the first man home. Comparatively a newcomer to the sport, Toomer put up a remarkably fine performance. iThe course started from tlie Centra' Fire Station m the city, and ran through the Hutt Valley to the foot of the Mungaroa Hills and back. It was a stiff test for the cyclists. Toomer, from a 11% minute handicap, covered the journey m 2 hours 21 mins. 31 sees., while Gane's time from scratch was 2 hours 15 mins. 26 sees. While the race wasn't productive of anything brilliant, it was characterised by the solid performance of the whole field, very little time separating some of the riders. At the Taitai Gorge some of the scratch men made up some of their leeway. Bright and Tinkler were the first to turn for home. Arthurs, Toomer and Puniti followed* m a bunch a little behind them. ■ r Three scratch men, and the three who gained fastest time, came at the finishing line bunched together. ,In the final sprint, Gane just got there, .followed closely by P. N. Robinson (2 hours 15 mm. 26 1-5 sees.), and F. Christensen (2 hours 15 mins. 26 2-5 sees. Toomer finished narrowly, m. front of Puniti, Arthurs and Bright, these three being separated only by a wheel from each other. .
