CHRISTCHURCH.

(From Our Own Correspondents

It is a fairly common thing m the realm of lilywhite amateur athletics for successful competitors to receive pewter trophies or something of the sort, which aren't worth anything like their advertised value. This is a practice that should be kicked m the abdomen very hard. Recipients of these emblems of honor usually say nothing about the fraud which has been practised on them, but W. Robertson, the Ashburton boxer, isn't built on those ' specifications. He notched a second prize at the New Zealand Championships, held at Wellington, and is now kicking up a bobbery, saying that the bauble isn't of the quality it had been represented to be. He wrote the Canterbury Centre on the subject, and the secretary took the implement. along to an expert to get a verdict as' to its true price. This gent reported that it was considerably below the value stated, so the Centre is going to speak to the Council about it. .November 20 has been , fixed as the date tor the tussle between R. Tur- : ncr, of Sydney, and T. Tracy, of Weljlineton, for the Hght-weijiht cham- \ pionship of these bias, the rendezvous 'being the Theatre Royal. Christ-

church. The programme on that eagerly-awaited night will be garnished with a thrco-round contest between A. L. Nash and P. Olliver, for the middle-weight championship of Cantert"ry, and a six-round set-to between J. G-ilmour and J f Shaw. Under the present rules the boxing championships can be judged by a referee .alone. A notice of motion is to be considered by the Canterbury Centre adding a clause to the N.Z. Championship rules to the effect that the events must be judged by a referee and two judges. Another notice of motion aims at altering the rules of the New Zealand Council m the direction of abolishing the" system of giving a medal as first prize for a New Zealand championship. (This idea has been tried at various times all over the world and found wanting. It has never found favor and never will. Secure a good, unbiased referee and let him use the judgment born of his experience, and there will be no need for a couple of (usually) excited, partisan judges who can't judge any more than an ornithorynchus can carve cold cow.— Bd. "Truth.") Light-of-other-days William Murphy, Esq.^ wrote .the Canterbury Centre offering to box m the Exhibition City m November, but the committee weren't taking any William. Poor old "has been" "Torpedo" Murphy. What an instance of "superfluous lags the veteran on the stage."
