BOXING.

<By Upper- Cut).

Copies of the new agreement arrived at m conference between the New South Wales Sports Club, the New Zealand Boxing Council * and the Brisbane G-ynasiuni and Amateur Association of Queensland have been sent on to the affiliated branches of the New Zealand Boxing Council for their perusal. The main alterations provide for each of the aforesaid bodies being officially represented at Australasian Amateur Championship meeting by not less thau three representatives instead of two, as heretofore. The inclusion of a new division (welter) m the championship competitions, and the insertion of a new clause stipulating that all competitors must have been bona-fide residents m the State they represent for s'.x months immediately prior to the date of the meeting, except except m the case of competitiors who have left their State for a specific purpose known to the body controlling the sport of the State they have resided m ; all competitors to be amateurs who can conform with the conditions defining the amateur status. It is further provided that tlift second prize m. the respective champion- ! ships is to be a trophy of the value j of £2 2s, instead of a silver medal, as heretofore. Another alteration that is likely to meet with opposition m some 'quarters is the. matter of judging. Whereas under the old rule the referee solely controlled the bouts, the judging is now placed m the hands of a referee nnd two judges. Should the latter disagree, the referee shall thereupon himself decide as to the winner. The conference unanimously threw out the old rub as a result of the experience gained at the recent Australasian tourney m Sydney. The New Zealand Boxing Council is circularising affiliated branches m respect to the proposal of sending an Australasian team to England to compete for the English Amateur Championships. The N.S.W. and Queensland delegates at the conference held to consider this matter expressed themselves as confident that they would experience no trouble whatever m financing tbeir representatives. The Council, m bringing this important matter before its various branches, points out that a little over £100 will be required and trusts that an immediate application will be made to the many patrons of the sport m the colony to - assist with contributions to the fund. As a report as to the prospects of a New Zealander being included m the team is required m Sydney in~ December, the Council is desirous of local associations acquainting him with as little delay as possible of the approximate amount they expect "to be able to contribute to the fund. "Upper-Cut" is sure that lovers of the sport will agree with him that New Zealand must not be overshadowed by New South Wales and Queensland hi this matter. There is reason to hope that an Australasian boxing team would emulate the doughty deeds m a smaller degree, of the famous "All-Blacks." Two shleinter bouts were to have come of! m Wellington during the current week, but a notification from the secretary of the lacal Boxing Association that the police would be put on the tracks of the promoters led to the scheme being knocked on the head. The following clipping is taken from the "Illustrated London News": —"The well-known feather-weight boxer, George Cooper, of Islington, has sailed for New Zealand by the SS. Rimutaka. Cooper, while m England, was a most consistent performer with, the gloves throughout the country. Week after week during the boxing season the Islington lad was to be seen at one or the other of the noted boxing shows m the metropolis. He was frequently summoned to appear at headquarters, and could always be relied upon to give an exhibition of hard hitting, coupled with science of no mean order. I wish the strudy and popular North Londonder every success m his new enterprise." Cooper must be m New Zealand at the present time as the Rimutaka is now on her homeward voyage. It is reported that < 'Snowy" Baker th: middle-weight Australasia amateur champion will be over this way for a holiday m November. Baker is a fine all-round athlete, and holds a splendid record for athletics m various branches. Mr Coffey, secretary of the Wellington Boxing Association, received a cable on Tuesday last, from "Amateur," of the Sydney "Referee," who had been requested to interview Hock Keys and ascertain the treason why he had not, at Auckland, when passing through from 'Frisco to Sydney, acknowledged the receipt of Mr- Coffey's letter containing an offer of a match with Tim Tracy. The cable was worded : "Keys unblameable ; am writing." Probably the mystery, if mystery it is, will now be cleared up.
