ATHLETIC QUACKS.

Harry. Pcarce Shies m His Castor.

■TO -THE^EDITOE.

Sir;— l read with great interest, the of Dr.. Mason's lecture, which appeared m your last issue especially his remarks on ju-jitsu, the Japanese -mode of • wrestling, the art of self defence and -physical culture - which all comes under ' the > one head— ilng in-. .Japan. I can assure you that so "far :as teaching the above sciences by correspondence is concerned, thedoctor is correct. I have been a .-professional athlete lor considerably over twenty years, duririg which time I have been instructor m athletics and physical culture to the police of three States of the Australian Commonwealth, and ha-ve won between 500 and 600 contests, including over 400 wrestling championships m every class, from middle weight amateur to heavy weight porfessional. I quite agree with Dr. Mason that teaching by correspondence is only a fallacy, and, m my opinion, obtaining money under false nrctences, and as proof of mv statements let any of the so-called physical culturists choose any of their clients whom they have been teachinc by post for six months and you, Mr Editor, m conjunction with any other two gentlemen, may place under my instruction any young fellow of ecmal weight to the one v chosen, and I will bet any sum m reason that after 14 days personal 'instruction .from me my pupil will win two out o,f any three fevents m athletics. ■■I- claim. to be the .only -man iii Australasia qualified -to- teach ju-jitsu, and nothing: gives me greater' pleasure -than acknowledging the man who taught :mo','" Yuko Tani. Thanking you for past courtesies. -^-1 am, etc., ° _ ..0,.- " .HARRY PEARCE. Champion' all-round wrestler and physical . culturist of Australasia. • "■,;,•'••-•■ • • Wellington; 'August "22. '
