APPLES FOR SOLDIERS

Sir, —Having road (if the glut of apples on the market *1 have wondered why apples are so scarce in this camp at Waioiiru. I have now been in ramp .seven weeks, and on two occasions only have we had stewed apples for pudding. Mostly it has been rice, sago or tapioca. About twice a week we have had an apple given to ns each at lunch time, and it has been a crime if anybody grabbed more than one. Snrelv it would he cheaper and better i'or the Government to give us more of our own New Zealand fruit to maintain the health of its troops. .Moreover, the men would not be forced to buy tinned fruits from the canteens to vary their diet. As for such a thing as a tomato, it has never been seen on the mess table of our regiment since we have been in camp. I'iuvatr.
