HIGH NOVEMBER TOTAL BEST IN CITY SINCE 1929 MARKED ADVANCE FOR YEAR Permits for the erection of commercial, industrial and residential buildings issued by the Auckland City Council last month were responsible for an expenditure reaching the highest monthly figure since 1929. The total was £2;W.;M6, which brought the outlay for the 1J mon i lis of the year to £1,010.784, compared with £761,567 for the January-November period of last year. Among the more important of the buildings which were authorised during November were the living quarters to form part of the Fire Hoard establishment in Grey's Avenue, the huge wheat silos to be erected for the Northern Roller .Milling Company in Fort Street, two blocks of flats, each containing four living units, two factories, a warehouse, a small workshop, an additional storey to a warehouse, and alterations to a bank. Permits for Jo dwellings were issued, involving a total of £00.901. an average of over £'ll MO a house The houses ranged in value from £2OO to £'4-500. November's total is the highest since ■June, 11)20. when the industry was coming to the end of a long period of unusual prosperity. In that month, the total expenditure on buildings was £.'!o;T7l.'i, but this included ibe estimated cost of the Civic- Theatre, £220.000, October, 1925. another remarkable month, the total outlay being £'402.818. which included the £'.'128,000 spent on the new railway station. For at least one period in each of the years 1920, 1927 and 1928. the monthly total exceeded £200.000. but in the depth of the depression which followed the monthly figure was often below Clo.ooo. The decline was arrested in V.m.
